How to clean the bottom of an iron?
Cleaning an iron’s soleplate (the metal base) requires matching the method to the residue type. Always unplug and cool the iron before cleaning, and never submerge it in water.
General methods (light grime, scorch marks):
- Baking soda paste: Mix 2 parts baking soda with 1 part water. Apply to the cool soleplate with a cloth, rub gently, then wipe off with a damp cloth. Avoid on delicate non-stick coatings if abrasive.
- White vinegar: Dampen a microfiber cloth with distilled white vinegar and wipe the soleplate. For stubborn buildup, place the iron (set to low, no steam) on a vinegar-soaked towel for 5–10 minutes, then wipe.
- Dish soap and warm water: Effective for oily or starch residue. Wipe with a soapy cloth, then a clean damp cloth, and dry thoroughly.
- Toothpaste (plain white, non-gel): Mild abrasive alternative to baking soda. Rub on, let sit briefly, wipe off with a damp cloth.
Burned or melted fabric/synthetic residue:
- Salt method: Sprinkle coarse salt on a sheet of parchment paper or cardboard. Run the warm (not hot) dry iron over it until residue lifts. Caution: salt can scratch coated, ceramic, or non-stick soleplates — check the manufacturer’s manual first.
- Acetone (nail polish remover): For melted plastic or synthetic fabric, apply a small amount to a cotton ball and rub the cold soleplate in a ventilated area. Test on a corner first; avoid on coated plates.
Steam vents and reservoir (mineral/limescale buildup):
- Mix 1:1 white vinegar and distilled water, fill the reservoir, and run the iron on the highest steam setting for 5 minutes over an old towel.
- Press the steam burst button repeatedly to flush deposits from the vents.
- Clear clogged vent holes with a cotton swab or toothpick (never metal pins).
- Empty the reservoir, refill with distilled water, and steam-rinse to remove vinegar residue.
Prevention:
- Use distilled or demineralized water instead of tap water to reduce limescale.
- Iron dark fabrics and synthetics at correct temperature settings to prevent scorch transfer.
- Wipe the soleplate with a damp cloth after each use once cooled.
- Empty the reservoir after ironing to prevent standing-water mineral deposits.
