Factory Reset: Android and iPhone Procedures
A factory reset erases all data, settings, and accounts, restoring the device to original out-of-box state. This action is irreversible.
Before Resetting (Both Platforms)
- Back up all data (cloud, PC, or external drive).
- Ensure battery is charged (≥50%) or keep device plugged in.
- Note account credentials; post-reset verification may be required.
- Remove SIM/microSD cards if they contain personal data.
Android
- Path: Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset) → Erase all data. (On some models: Settings → General Management → Reset on Samsung.)
- Confirm PIN/pattern when prompted.
- Device reboots and wipes data (typically 5–15 minutes).
Alternative methods:
- Recovery Mode: Power off → hold Power + Volume Up (varies by brand) → select Wipe data/factory reset via volume keys.
- Remote wipe: Visit google.com/android/find, select the device, choose Erase device. Requires the phone to be online.
Note: Android Factory Reset Protection (FRP) activates if a Google account is still signed in. Remove the account first (Settings → Accounts → Remove) if transferring the device to another user.
iPhone (iOS)
- Path: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings → Erase iPhone.
- Enter passcode and Apple ID password when prompted.
- Device erases and reboots (typically 5–15 minutes).
Alternative methods:
- Recovery Mode: Connect to a computer → open Finder (macOS) or iTunes (Windows) → force-restart the phone → select Restore iPhone.
- Remote wipe: Visit icloud.com/find, select the device, choose Erase This Device.
Note: Activation Lock remains active if the device is not signed out of iCloud before reset. Disable Find My iPhone (Settings → [Apple ID] → Find My → off) if transferring ownership.
Post-Reset
- Complete initial setup or power off for handover.
- Verify data wipe completion; FRP/Activation Lock prompts confirm protection is engaged.
