How to remove stubborn stains from clothes?
General Protocol (all stains):
- Act fast. Fresh stains lift far more easily than set ones.
- Blot, never rub — rubbing spreads the stain and damages fibers.
- Scrape off solids first with a spoon or dull knife.
- Work from the outside in to prevent spreading.
- Test any cleaner on a hidden seam or hem first.
- Check the care label before applying water, heat, or chemicals.
- Do not machine-dry until the stain is fully gone — heat permanently sets most stains. Repeat treatment if needed.
Stain-Specific Treatments:
-
Oil / Grease (cooking oil, butter, salad dressing): Apply dish soap (degreasing agent) directly, work in gently, let sit 5–10 minutes, rinse with warm water. Absorb excess with baking soda or cornstarch before washing.
-
Blood (protein-based): Use cold water only — hot water coagulates protein and sets the stain. Soak 15–30 minutes, then rub with soap or enzyme detergent. Hydrogen peroxide (3%) can lift residual stain on whites and colorfast fabrics.
-
Wine / Coffee / Tea (tannin-based): Blot immediately. For wine, cover with salt or pour white wine to neutralize. Soak in a mix of 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water, or apply an oxygen-based bleach soak for whites.
-
Ink (ballpoint, marker): Dab with rubbing alcohol on the underside of the fabric so ink exits the fiber, not deeper in. Place a paper towel beneath the stain to absorb transferred ink.
-
Sweat / Yellow underarm stains: Soak in equal parts white vinegar and water, or apply a paste of baking soda and water. For severe yellowing on whites, hydrogen peroxide plus dish soap works effectively.
-
Grass: Rub with enzyme detergent or a mix of white vinegar and water; rinse with cold water. Avoid bleach on colored fabric.
-
Tomato / Sauce: Flush from the back with cold water, then treat with dish soap and a splash of white vinegar before washing.
-
Mud: Let it dry completely, brush off solids, then pre-treat with enzyme detergent and wash in warm water.
-
Chocolate: Pre-soak in enzyme detergent dissolved in cold water, then wash normally. Treat residual grease with dish soap.
-
Makeup / Foundation: Dab with dish soap or micellar water, rinse, then launder as normal.
Recommended Agents:
- Dish soap — grease and general food stains
- White vinegar — tannins, odors, sweat
- Baking soda — absorption, deodorizing
- Hydrogen peroxide (3%) — whites, blood, set-in organic stains
- Enzyme-based detergent — protein stains (blood, dairy, grass)
- Oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) — safe brightening for most washables
- Rubbing alcohol — ink, dyes
Cautions:
- Chlorine bleach: whites only; never mix with vinegar or ammonia (toxic gas).
- Silk, wool, leather: avoid peroxide, bleach, and aggressive scrubbing; use mild soap and cold water or professional cleaning.
- “Dry clean only” garments: do not pre-treat with water-based solutions; blot and take to a cleaner, identifying the stain type.
